Videophile II - The perfect way to start organising your video collection
I don't know how you organise your clip/movie collection,
But i recently had the chance to look deeper into and test an application called Videophile II.
If i was looking for an application to organise my collection, Videophile II would be an excelent candidate.

REMARK :
All clips/movies in the sample library will have the status OFFLINE. This is normal since they are not stored on your drives.
But the example library will give you an idea of what you can do with Videophile II
What does Videophile II do ?

VideoPhile II was created for the purpose of managing and organising your multimedia files. Its powerful feature-set lends itself as an ideal solution for cataloguing large collections of media content. Specifically, it is aimed at collections that traverse multile storage devices and where it is otherwise inherently difficult to locate a particular file in a collection.
Through its easy-to-use interface, it is possible to quickly and easily locate any file in your collection and play it back.
Features include:
- Support for user's default Media Player
- Auto-creation of Library, including thumbnail generation
- Support for advanced Tagging, using hierarchies, links and synonyms
- Ability to perform complex, compound searches in order to identify and locate files
- Ability to create and playback ‘highlight’ segments from your files
- Facilitates basic editing of files (through external applications, where installed)
- Caters for collections that traverse many, offline storage devices
- Ability to create and organise dynamic playlists
- Support for a Bluetooth HID profile in order to use the application more conveniently when in TV-Out mode.
- Ability to generate ‘Poster’ images of files (commonly used as previews by file uploaders)
- Facilitates identification of duplicate files
Videophile II is a Direct Show-based application and, hence, it can play-back any media type for which your system has the necessary filters installed. My recommendation, if you are not already using it, is to have ffdshow installed, together with the Haali Media Splitter to handle MPEG-2 and Matroska streams. You may wish to supplement this with either or both Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative for, respectively, the Realmedia and Quicktime formats, although there is some doubt as to the legality of these filters.

Pros :
This list of Pros is not placed in order of importance.
This list isn't complete either. You will discover other advantages as you go with the Videophile II application.
- Videophile II can be installed/used on a Windows Vista machine.
- Easely scans entire disks of clips you downloaded and makes automaticly thumbnails from them.
On top of this most data are filled automaticly in database too.

During tests i was able to create a library with more then 11000 records.
Automaticly scanned data can be personalised by the user.
How to change values for "Title / Alias" and "Description", see : Videophile II - File details area
Videophile II doesn't need the latest hardware to function.
I performed all scanning tests on 8 years old Pentium III desktop (For detailed hardware specifications see : Medion Lifetec 1 GHz multimediapc).
Videophile II does not take much diskspace.
You need less then 10 Mb of free space on the drive to install this application.
This includes the free tools that come with the package.
Remark :
You need, of course additional space for you libraries.
The more clips you have, the more thumbnails taken, the bigger the library will get.
Within Videophile II and his mini player you can use many short cut keys.

Although you can continue to open files in your favourite media player,
If you don't have one installed, Videophile II has his own media player integrated.
With Videophile II you can easely make "preview posters".
You don't need external applications like Image Grabber II, Video Thumbnails Maker or Media PLayer Classic anymore.

Wonderfull thing here, once the poster is displayed, click on the frame you like and the file plays from there untill the next frame displayed in the poster.
Videophile II can easely find duplicate files.
Regardless the location where they are located.
Videophile II can handle all type of media files.
Of course the degree of success depends on the fact that you have the needed codecs installed on your machine.
Adding files in a directory already scanned ?
Just scan it again, only "new files" will be added to the library.
The content/choices you have in the right click menus (File Inspector and File Browser) you can easely adapt/add.
In fact the Videophile II options ([ Tools ] - menu)let you configure them.
How you can do this ? ....... Just see Videophile II - Manipulate your files with external applications in this thread.
Cons :
- Videophile II has problems handling files wit special characters in their filenames.

Videophile II does not let you do manual entries in the database.
This does not make Videophile II suitable to catalogue all your DVD / VHS / Bluaray disk / .... you have in your collection.
Uninstalling Videophile II does not remove all files and directories.

Conclusion :
Videophile II is/can be more then a video library alone.
As you recieve "Other free tools" with it (like ASFBin, DivFIx ++, FLVTool and MPGTX) and as you can use your own favourite tools with Videophile II, it's more a complete package to handle movies/clips.
The scanning, tagging, ordering, creating segments will take some of your time.
But time is relative in this context.
Took me for example more then 4 hours to create a library with more then 11000 records.
You can say that is fast because thats for almost 50 files scanned/thumbnails created/info retrieved every minute.
And you will found out it's time well spend. Once your done you will find back your favourite clips wherever they are stored in the blink of an eye.

Videophile II - A simple start with ....
How to create your first library ?
- Click this
 icon on your desktop.
Videophile II opens by default with a New library.
- By default the "Tip of The Day" is displayed.
Click the OK button to close.
You can change this behaviour via the [ Tools ] - Option...
- Give a name to your libray.
Select [ Library ] - Save As...
The default location is "C:\Program Files\Videophile II\Libraries" but you can change the location.
Type a name for your new library.
- You are now ready to Add files to the new library.
Select the menu "[ Library ] / Add Files
- The option dialogue is displayed.
- Set your selection criteria.
For details see Videophile II - Add files to a (new) library
- Click the
 button to begin scanning.
- You can follow the progress on the screen.
The progress bar is located underneed the library inspector
- Once done, all records are scanned into the "Untagged" folder.
- You aer now ready to begin tagging and ordering your files.
