Description
Videophile has the ability to create a 'Poster' image based on any file in a
Library. A 'Poster' is an image made up of a sequence of frames extracted
from a movie and, additionally, describes the format of the file together
with a description of it's content, based on it's Tags. An example Poster
appears below by way of an example:

'Poster' images are popularly used by those who upload movies (to storage
sites, forums and Newsgroups) as a means of providing a preview of the file
uploaded.

'Live' Posters

Videophile Posters are further enhanced by the fact that they are 'live'.
When viewing a Poster, double-clicking on any frame will play the associated
file from the point at which the thumbnail was extracted up until the point
when the next thumbnail in the sequence was created.

Creating Posters
To create a Poster,

- right-click on any thumbnail in the File Browser and select 'Create Poster
Image' from the context-menu that appears. Or
- select 'Create Poster Image' from the Tools menu

Configuring Posters
The layout of a Poster may be changed via the 'Poster Settings' tab within
the Program Options dialogue. (Tools | Program Options)

I am very curious after this feature.
I think it will be one of the first ones i get deeper into.

Knock yourself out! I wrote the whole thing in a few idle hours whilst waiting for replies in the other thread - I doubt that it is perfect but it hasn't crashed on me yet. Needless to say, it only works when the file is playable and when Videophile is able to grab thumbnails; on my machine that is 99.9% of files....

Videophile II - trouble creating a poster with ....

Here my questions / expierience / problems with this feature thusfar :

  1. Creating the problem is not the isue.
Either way i start the creation.
    Quote:
    • right-click on any thumbnail in the File Browser and select 'Create Poster
Image' from the context-menu that appears.
    • select 'Create Poster Image' from the Tools menu

The poster is displayed in a separate window.
I discovered the poster files where created in directory "C:\Program Files\VideoPhile II\Temp".

I think it would be nice to indicate somewhere that the poster is saved to "C:\Program Files\VideoPhile II\Temp" automaticly, or give the option to save the file to a location of the users choice.

  2. The feature,
    Quote:
    'Live' Posters :

Videophile Posters are further enhanced by the fact that they are 'live'.
When viewing a Poster, double-clicking on any frame will play the associated
file from the point at which the thumbnail was extracted up until the point
when the next thumbnail in the sequence was created.

    Is this implimented yet ?
I can't discover how to do it.

  3. Videophile II stops reacting.
Here is what i did :

    • I closed the first poster window.
    • I started to create a second one.
At first it looks normal and you can see the progress.

    • And then nothing

REMARKS :

  • In the lower right corner you can see that ffdshow did start two instances of the "video decoder" as well as of the "audio decoder".

<<

I agree and intend to do this. But as I've only just written it, it's not there yet...

>>

Yup. Works for me. Which file did you use for the test? Remember that the test files are very short in duration and therefore the frames are grabbed at very small intervals: When you double-click a frame in the poster it will only play up until the next frame in the preview. In the case of our test files, if you chose a 2 second clip, you are only talking about it playing for 0.08 of a second!! i suggest you test this feature again with a longer clip....

>>
# I started to create a second one.
At first it looks normal and you can see the progress.

# And then nothing
<<
I have discovered that for VERY short files, the program may hang (again because the intervals between images are so short). I will fix this, although 1 and 2 second clips are not really normal!!!

>>
In the lower right corner you can see that ffdshow did start two instances of the "video decoder" as well as of the "audio decoder".
<<
Assuming that you had a file open inthe mini-player, there will be an ffdshow instance for that file PLUS one for the 'live' feature of the 'Poster'. This is normal....

Thanks but I don't need that information. It's mainly for MS bods and doesn't mean a lot to me....

OK, I apologise. It may be that the 'live' feature is not working for you as it is using the mouse co-ordinates of the screen and not the window! Doh! Silly me!! I'll fix it.

Funnily enough, it works OK for me because the image fills my entire screen!

My other points are still valid wrt to file duration, though. Testing this feature is best done with a file longer than a few seconds, til I fix the bugs relating to very short clips...

You were right about the raison why Videphile II hanged.
I tested again with longer files.
It worked now, only ........

The segment of the clip played when i clicked a frame in the preview,
Did not corresponded.
I think this is due to the resolution my and(or) your display is set.
I have it set to 1024*768.

What resolution is your display set ?
I'll bet it will be a much higher resolution.

Check your email. I've fixed the double-clicking-runs-the-wrong-frame-problem!

Also, you can configure all the options that are currently avaiable for Posters under Tools/Options

I quickly tested the new version.
Must say, it looks good.
I do have one question/request :

The feature only works once.

  • You create the poster
  • The poster gets automaticly saved
  • The poster image is displayed on top of Videophile II
  • You can click on the different frames and display that part of the clip/movie.

But once you close the poster image that is saved as a JPG file, you can't repeat this anymore.
Unless you create the poster image again.
Would it not be nice if you could, via an option in the menu, redisplay the created poster and reuse this feature ?

I have been considering this but haven't yet decided one way or another...

There would be quite a few problems to overcome and as it doesn't take that long to create the Poster I'm not sure that it's worthwhile addressing them...

For example, a libary containing 5000 files could easily eat up 0.5GB of disk space just to acommodate these posters... And do I store them in the clip's folder or somewhere else? And what if the file has been edited since the Poster was created?
