Creating new entries for known applications see figure Videophile II_01.JPG does not work.
Figure Videophile II_01.JPG
In fact neither the "browse" button nor the "test" button do something. Closing this window vie the "X" is the only possibility. In order to create successfully an entry, do i need a certain format to maintain ?
Searching a group of files via a TAG is not possible the list doesn't get populated. The only search in the database that functions is the one via "Tools / Find files".
Adding 1 item alone to an existing database is not possible.
All searched items are catagorised under "Unplayable Items". What determines if a file is playable or not ? Wich player(s) / codec(s) has to be installed to make it a "Playable Item" ? (I have VLC Media PLayer / ALShow Media PLayer / Windows Media PLayer installed and the clip does play in all three players) (I presume all needed codecs are installed since the playback of the file function in all media players installed on this computer)
No thumbs are created. The only thing i get is : Is there an application needed on the computer to create the thumbs ?
No file details available, regardless the file selected in the program. Where / how are they determined ?
The "Save as" function is not available. Saving the "project" is possible by pushing the "X". You first get the "Location & name window"
After naming the file and chosing the location you get an error :
However the file seems to be saved. Very confusing ....
Dubbelclicking does open the file, Only thing i don't know with player is used to open the file. This is what is showing on the screen :
The first frame from the clip
The opened file is an MPEG file wich is associated with "Windows Media Player" in normal conditions. The only buttons on the keyboard that are doing something are :
R : Jumps to next chapter. Arrow pointing to right : Jumps to next chapter. ^ : Starts PLaying / showing file on the screen. Esc : Stops media player activities and returns to "Videpphile II". Enter : Pause/PLay once the clip plays (see ^ key).
Of course i'm using an AZERTY keyboard.
As already mentioned,
Right click normally gets you a short menu of valid choices. In this case i "right clicked" on an MPEG file. I don't have installed the following aplications :
MediaInfo
GraphEdit
VirtualDub
Digital Video Repair
AVIdemux
How do i remove them from this menu (see picture) How can i successfully add applications that i did installed ? (See the first remark)

>> 1 Creating new entries for known applications see figure Videophile II_01.JPG does not work. <<
I haven't coded this part of the application yet. When it's written, it will be possible to open a file in any program that you set up. For now, the only external applications you can run are the ones that I have hard-coded to appear on the right-click menus.
>> 2 Searching a group of files via a TAG is not possible the list doesn't get populated. The only search in the database that functions is the one via "Tools / Find files". <<
Allow me to explain: The Tools/Find Files option is to allow you to perform searches on things other than tags, e.g. filenames, descriptions etc. If you wish to find files with a certain tag, just drag and drop that tag from the Tree on the left to the area on the right - that is the way that the program is designed!! This is mentioned several times in the Word document. Or are you referring to something else? Or are you saying that dragging and dropping doesn't work?
>> 3 Adding 1 item alone to an existing database is not possible. <<
How are you trying to add this one item? Is it via the 'Library/Add files..' menu? That is the ONLY way to add files to a Library. Please describe the problem in more detail....
>> 4 All searched items are catagorised under "Unplayable Items". What determines if a file is playable or not ? <<
If they are categorised under 'Unplayable Items' it means that they could not be correctly opened by Videophile. I suspect that I can solve this problem but I need some help from you. I would like for you to please install GraphEdit and open one of the files with that. Then post a screen-shot of what you see in GraphEdit. One theory I have is that you may have VobSub (aka VSFilter) installed: If you do and it is set to 'Auto-load' then this will cause a problem in Videophile. I have a fix for this if this is the case. Please let me now....
>> 5 No thumbs are created. The only thing i get is : Is there an application needed on the computer to create the thumbs ? << No application is required to create Thumbs - Videophile can do it. The reason this is isn't working is that the files cannot be opened. See my reply to 4 above.
>> 6 No file details available, regardless the file selected in the program. Where / how are they determined ? <<
In order to open a file in the File Viewer, you have to click the left-most button in the mini-player. This will open whatever file is selected in the list of thumbnails above. Alternatively, drag-and-drop a thumbnail onto itself (this is my preferred method of doing it). Of course, becuase of the problem you describe in 4 above, you may see an error message.
>> 7 The "Save as" function is not available. Saving the "project" is possible by pushing the "X". You first get the "Location & name window"

I don't have this problem on my machine but, anyway, I have since changed the code to get the Save As feature working properly. I will email you a new version of teh program with these changes incorporated...
>> 8 Dubbelclicking does open the file, Only thing i don't know with player is used to open the file. This is what is showing on the screen : << The player that is being used is Videophile's own internal player!!!
>> 9 As already mentioned, Right click normally gets you a short menu of valid choices. In this case i "right clicked" on an MPEG file. I don't have installed the following aplications :

See my reply to point 1 above. At the moment these are hard-coded and cannot be removed. When I have finished the code for configuring External Applications you wil only see those apps that you set-up.
Basically, most of your problems to this point are due to Videophile not being able to open files (the rest of the stuff you mention relates to stuff I am still in the process of coding). I really need you to address my request to point 4 to solve this; as I say, I strongly suspect it to be related to VobSub/VSFilter settings as I have seen these symptoms on another test machine...
By the way, can you please confirm whether or not you have downloaded my videos.vpl file from FileFactory (I sent you the link via email) and let me know if you have any problems with it.

Just downloaded GraphEdit from digital-digest.com. I did see that the aplication is compatible with : , , and . Windows XP is not on the list. Latest build : Nov 16, 2001
Screen :
Description :
GraphEdit is a visual tool for building and testing filter graphs. It is provided as an executable with the DirectX SDK. With GraphEdit, you can quickly build and test filter graphs to see if they function as you expect. You can even view a filter graph created by an application running in another process.
Just downloaded GraphEdit 9.0 from www.softpedia.com. This version seems to be compatible with Windows All OS. Latest update : August 3rd, 2007, 19:01 GMT

It is provided as an executable with the DirectX SDK. With GraphEdit, you can quickly build and test filter graphs to see if they function as you expect. You can even view a filter graph created by an application running in another process.
Filters are displayed as boxes, with a text caption showing the name of the filter. Pins appear as small squares along the edge of the filter. Input pins are shown on the left side of the filter, and output pins are on the right side of the filter. A pin connection appears as an arrow connecting the output pin to the input pin.
GraphEdit is pretty easy-to-use, reliable and uses a custom persistence format. This format is not supported for application use, but it is helpful for testing and debugging your application.

Just for the record, I am going to install just the latter version. Report later how it went....

This is what GraphEdit shows :
I installed GraphEdit in directory "C:\DATA\Applications\Video_tools\GraphEdit\graphedit\". In fact no installation was needed, i just unpacked the archive file i downloaded. Opening the file with GraphEdit via the menu in Videophile II does not work. I presume the path to the exe on your computer is hard coded to ? I had this flashing window :

For now (and reasons explained previously) GraphEdit will not function from Videophile unless it is installed in "C:\Program Files\Multimedia\GraphEdit".
Out of interest, that file looks like it should work just fine in Videophile. Have you tried to add it to a library? If so, did it work? _________________ If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there... - Mike Skinner

BTW, have you checked your email? I sent you an updated version of the program but I notice from your screenshots above that you are using the older one... _________________ If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there... - Mike Skinner

Uninstalling Videophile II :
Remarks made during the upgrade, I noticed that "files & directories" where not removed. In fact in the directory "C:\Program Files\" this directory structure remained on my computer.
"Libraries" and "Temp" both empty directories. The directory "C:\Program Files\VideoPhile II" contained the files :

Creating a new library gave the same result regarding the thumbnails. Videophile II could not create them. The message displayed see my procedure here : Videophile II - Creating a new library in .... .
Also since your opinion was that all the files found where categorised in "Unplayable Items" was the settings for the VobSub filter (aka VSFilter), i did try out the new option "[Tools] / VobSub settings".

I had this error displayed,
I tried to open a file in the mini player with the "left-most button in the mini-player"

This error was the result.
Error 429: ActiveX component can't create object
From what understood it's one OCX component missing are wrongly registered. Therefore i reregistered the OCX files that came with the application
vbalprogbar6.ocx
qprogif.ocx
Both files where registered with success. But the error was / is still present.
I closed the application. As far as i know i did not change filenames or paths. Trying to reopen results now in an error.
I did tried to repair the installation but had no luck. A simple uninstall /reinstall was not successfully either. I had to :
Uninstall the applicaiton.
Remove the remaining files and directories.
Reboot the computer.
Reinstall the application.
Trying to open the file with the "left-most button in the mini-player" results in an error. See remark above However moving the slider of the mini player results in "beginning to play the clip.
But closing Videophile II and reopen results in this error again :

As far as uninstallation problems are concerned, the installer I am using appears to give me little control over what remains on the host computer following an uninstall.
I plan to investigate this in due course and will probably switch to a different installer altogether at some point so let's ignore these for now.... _________________ If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there... - Mike Skinner

Can you also please answer this question that I posted above:

OK, sorry to post in short bursts but I think that the problem you have is that a filter called 'SampleGrabber' could not be added to the Filter Graph. This should be apparent in GraphEdit (for a problem file) as you will either see 'SampleGrabber' unconnected to anything or else it will be missing altogether... _________________ If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there... - Mike Skinner

While I'm about it can you please tell me if you have any codec packs installed on your machine and, if so, which ones. Also, what players do you have installed... _________________ If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there... - Mike Skinner

I know this won't work whilst you are unable to open files but I've added a new feature to create a 'Poster' image of a file - like ImageGrabber does. It's on the Tools menu. Here's an example...
