Videophile II - What is ....
Managing and organising your multimedia files with ....

What is Videophile II (programmers description) ?

Basically, Videophile II a Media Library for video content and has a lot of features.

VideoPhile II was created for the purpose of managing and organising your multimedia files. Its powerful feature-set lends itself as an ideal solution for cataloguing large collections of media content. Specifically, it is aimed at collections where all the content relates to one topic and where it is otherwise inherently difficult to locate a particular file in that collection.
Through its easy-to-use interface, it is possible to quickly and easily locate any file in your collection and play it back.

Videophile II is a Direct Show-based player and, hence, it can playback any media type for which your system has the necessary filters installed.

Hardware specs for running Videophile II :
Not the minimum requirements ....

  • Display: 1280x1024
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 / 3.00GHz
  • RAM: 2GB
  • O/S: Windows XP SP2

Features of Videophile II (programmers list) :

  • Auto-creation of Library, including thumbnail generation
  • Support for advanced Tagging, using hierarchies and links
  • Ability to perform complex, compound searches in order to identify and locate files
  • Ability to create ‘highlight’ segments from your files
  • Facilitates basic editing of files (through external applications, where installed)
  • Caters for collections that traverse many, offline storage devices
  • Ability to create and organise dynamic playlists
  • Support for a Bluetooth HID profile in order to use the application more conveniently when in TV-Out mode

Additional features :

  • Can playback any media type for which your system has the necessary filters installed.

    The author recommendation :
If you are not already using it, is to have ffdshow installed, together with the Haali Media Splitter to handle MPEG-2 and Matroska streams. You may wish to supplement this with either or both Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative for, respectively, the Realmedia and Quicktime formats, although there is some doubt as to the legality of these filters.

Software/filters you may install also before running Videophile II :
Those softwares/filters are not required/necessary, but the capability of playback some files can depend on their installation.

The author wrote :
Quote:
Videophile can be configured to use external applications to process a file.
The following freeware applications are currently supported:

  • Media Info (for getting detailed file format information)
  • VirtualDub (for processing AVI files)
  • MPGTX (for automatically trimming MPEG files)
  • DIVFIX++ (for repairing broken AVI files)
  • Digital Video Repair (for repairing broken AVI files)
  • ASFBin (for automatically trimming WMV files)
  • AVI Demux (for processing and converting multiple file formats)
  • Graphedit
  • GSPot (for codec identification)
  • FLVTool (for trimming FLV files)

Since some of those applications are used / reffered to / listed in menu, i would say they are needed to fully benefit all the features of this application.

REMARK :

  • the visibility or otherwise of these applications on context menus is determined by the extension of the File that is right-clicked on. For instance, the menu item ‘Cut with ASFBin’ only ever appears in the case of WMV file extensions.

  • At the moment it is not possible to configure the paths to the external apps so if you want to use these features the applications have to exist in these paths:
    Quote:
    Media Info
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\MediaInfo\MediaInfo.exe

    VirtualDub
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\VirtualDub\ VirtualDub.exe

    MPGTX
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\Movica\mpgtx.exe

    DIVFIX++
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\DivFix++\DivFix++.exe

    Digital Video Repair
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\Digital Video Repair\DVR.exe

    ASFBin
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\ASFBin\asfbin.exe

    AVIDemux
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\avi demux\avidemux2_gtk.exe

    GraphEdit
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\GraphEdit

    GSPot
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\GSPot

    FLVTool (for trimming FLV files)
    C:\Program Files\Multimedia\FLVTool

Real Alternative 1.84

Download : free-codecs.com

Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player.

Download Real Alternative

You do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well. Supported: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages. .smi and .smil files sometimes only play the first part of a clip. This is a limitation of the current Media Player Classic. The RealMedia Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla.

Some advantages compared to RealPlayer :

- Quick and easy install
- It's easy to make an unattended installation
- Proper uninstallation
- No background processes
- Use a player of your own choice
- Low on resources
- No advertising, no registration forms, nothing annoying

Limitations :

- .smi and .smil files only play the first part of a clip. This is only a problem when the clip consists of multiple parts. These files are not very common. These files do play correctly when embedded in a browser.
- The RealMedia DirectShow splitter does not work with streaming content. You must use the included Media Player Classic to play streaming content.

Features of Real Alternative 1.84 :

- Media Player Classic [version 6.4.9.1-72]
- RealMedia Codecs [version 6.0.14.806]
- RealMedia plugin for Internet Explorer
- RealMedia plugin for Opera/Mozilla/Netscape/Google Chrome
- RealMedia DirectShow splitter [version 1.0.1.2]

Features of Real Alternative 1.84 Lite :

- RealMedia Codecs [version 6.0.14.806]
- RealMedia plugin for Internet Explorer
- RealMedia plugin for Opera/Mozilla/Netscape/Google Chrome
- RealMedia DirectShow splitter [version 1.0.1.1]

The only difference between the regular and lite versions is that the lite version does not include Media Player Classic.

Real Alternative Lite allows you to play RealMedia files in all DirectShow enabled players. Without this filter RealMedia files can only be played in Media Player Classic. This filter only works with files that are on your harddrive. It does NOT work with streaming content. Therefore it is highly recommended to use Media Player Classic, because MPC does support streaming content.

Changes in Real Alternative 1.84 :

- Updated Media Player Classic to version 6.4.9.1 rev. 78
- Now supports the Google Chrome web browser

Important Note :

- Real Alternative 1.52 works on Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003/XP64 with DirectX 7 or higher installed.

QuickTime Alternative 2.6.2

Download : free-codecs.com

QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt, .3gp and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages.

Download QuickTime Alternative

As a bonus, Internet Explorer will play all QuickTime movies that are embedded in a webpage. You do need a media player that is capable of playing QuickTime files. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well. The QuickTime Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla. The QuickTime plugins include iPIX and QuickTimeVR.

Some advantages compared to QuickTime player :

- Quick and easy install
- It's easy to make an unattended installation
- No background processes
- Use a player of your own choice
- Low on resources
- Smaller size

Features of QuickTime Alternative 2.6.2 :

- Media Player Classic [version 6.4.9.1 rev 53]: this is a full-featured player which has internal decoding support for DVD, MPEG-2, MP3, MP2, AAC, AC3 and DTS. It also has internal support for opening Matroska and Ogg containers. Media Player Classic is also capable of playing QuickTime and RealMedia content if those codecs are installed.
- QuickTime Codecs [version 7.50.61.0]: required for playing QuickTime content.
- QuickTime DirectShow filter: allows you to play QuickTime content in all DirectShow enabled players.
Without this filter QuickTime content can only be played in Media Player Classic.
- QuickTime plugin for Internet Explorer: allows you to view QuickTime content that is embedded in a webpage. It is installed together with the QuickTime codecs.
- QuickTime plugin for Opera/Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape/Google Chrome: allows you to view QuickTime content that is embedded in a webpage.
- Extra plugins for QuickTime: plugins for viewing some special formats that are sometimes used on webpages.
- CoreAVC: is an external filter for Media Player classic
- CoreAAC: is an AAC DirectShow filter decoder based on FAAD2.

Features of QT Lite 2.6.2 :

- QuickTime base components [version 7.50.61.0]
- QuickTime ActiveX plugin
- QuickTime plugin for Opera/Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape/Google Chrome

The only difference between the regular and lite versions is that the lite version does not include Media Player Classic.

Changes in QuickTime Alternative 2.6.2 :

- Updated Media Player Classic to version 6.4.9.1 rev. 78
- Now supports the Google Chrome web browser

Gabest Flash Video Splitter v1.0.0.4

Flash Video (".FLV" extension) is the format used to display video in Flash content. Most Flash Video content is viewed online (on sites such as YouTube), but in order to view .FLV content locally, you need a splitter installed (available below).

You will also need an FLV decoder installed. FFDShow can be enabled to play this format. You simply need to instruct it to decode "FLV1" content on the codec section of its configuration page (by default it may be disabled).

Downloading Flash Video files locally can be made easier using the VideoDownloader FireFox extension.

Gabest MP4 Splitter

In order to play MP4 files, you must have MP4 Splitter installed. Not to be confused with MPEG-4 Video, the MP4 Bitstream format is a wrapper format (similar to AVI/OGM/Matroska).
Click here : Gabest MP4 Splitter for downloading.

The format was licensed from Apple's QuickTime by the MPEG group as the official file format for MPEG-4 content. It should become more popular as commercial entities start shipping more MPEG-4 content.

How to install MP4 Splitter ?

If you are unable to install the filter, please read this small guide : How to install/uninstall DLL and AX codec files from Guides section.

Important Note :

Gabest MP4 Splitter can't be used with the Haali Media Splitter installed So it's not advisable to have both files installed on your system in the same time.

    • Library Tree's scrollbar now updates when scrolling with the mouse wheel
    • Scrollbar on Library Tree is no longer permanently visible; only appears when necessary
    • bit of a code tidy-up; removed some dead code and references, optimised size of some images
    • improved the overlaid timestamp in the Preview area; it now sizes more intelligently and as a result is more legible more often
    • timestamp in full screen mode now increments/decrements when frame-stepping
    • it is now possible to add a tag to the file currently open in the Preview area by dragging and dropping from the thumbnail to the Library Tree
    • Added items to the Help menu that link to the Videophile II forum, though there is next-to-nothing at that forum yet!

  • Beta version 1.2.3 (07 november 2008)

      Quote:
See the authors article here : Running External Applications with Videophile II
The following freeware applications are supported and come supplied with Videophile, since their licensing permits this:
      • Media Info (for getting detailed file format information)
      • MPGTX (for automatically trimming MPEG files)
      • ASFBin (for automatically trimming WMV files)
      • DIVFIX++ (for repairing broken AVI files)
      • FLVTool2 (for trimming Flash Video files)
The installation path for those applications is "C:\Program Files\Videophile II\Multimedia"
  • Alpha version 1.28 (15 october 2008)
    • New installation program
    • When you are editing the Description part of a file (in the File Inspector), if you highlight a word (or words) you will notice that the highlighted text appears below the text area with a little Tag symbol beside it. You can drag and drop this 'label' onto the tree to create a new tag and it will automatcally tag the file with that tag too. Should save the user some time when cataloguing a Library.
      Quote:
      For example:

The user enters the text "A movie about a cowboy starring John Wayne". Then they highlight the word 'cowboy' and drag and drop that word onto the tree to create a new Tag 'Cowboy'.

  • Alpha version 1.26 / 1.27 (14 october 2008)
    • New database engine with hugely improved speed as mentioned.
    • New layout for the File Inspectoryou should find that everything fits much nicer on a small screen now and things can be collapsed and expanded.
    • fixed a couple of small bugs....

  • Alpha version 1.25 (10 october 2008)
    • On the 'Open File' menu (via right-click on a Thumbnail) I have added the option 'Choose Program' so that the standard Windows dialog will appear and allow the user to open a file with any application they choose.
      Quote:
This is NOT how External Application support will be implemented in the final version but it at least addresses some of the 'issues' that you felt existed...

  • Alpha version 1.24 (06 october 2008)
    • Export to CSVC includes all available data.
    • Fixed the crash on resizing the File Browser.
    • Nicer (IMHO) icons for Tags and links

  • Alpha version 1.21 / 1.22 / 1.23 (01 october 2008 / 02 october 2008 / 03 october 2008)
    • Bug fix for the error "Run-time error '5': Cannot save the image. GDI+Error:7"
    • Re-instated the video overlaying in bith full-screen and the mini-player. It was switched off by mistake in the last version I sent to you while I was testing the memory problem.
    • added the ability to 'Cancel' the process whilst adding new files: hit the ESC key.
    • Whilst adding files, the number of files scanned and the duration is displayed during the process.

  • Alpha version 1.20 (01 october 2008)
    • if a file cannot be opened, the File Inspector will be updated for that clip (previously, the last successfully opended file remained open) and, instead of a pop-up error message appearing, there is a more informative message displayed in the mini-player.
    • I have done away with the 'Unable to Grab Thumbnails' message when you attempt to open a file. It only appears now when you try to press the Capture Thumbnail button. Again, much more sensible....

  • Alpha version 1.19 (01 october 2008)
    • Have changed the 'Find Files' dialog so that you can now save a search.
    • Also search 'Descriptions' and 'Aliases'.
    • Added support to Edit saved searches.
    • A new version of the master.vpl library is installed.

  • Alpha version 1.18 (30 september 2008)
    • You can now save playlists.
      Quote:
Drag and Drop an item to a playlist to add it.
Will add more features to this, like setting order of playback, exporting to other playlist formats etc.

    • New icons for saved Views (the previous View Icon will be used for saved searches, when I add it)

  • Alpha version 1.17 (29 september 2008)
    What's New:

    • Library Info on the Library menu now functional (but will probably add more to this)
    • More options under "Tools / Options" You can now set options for Memory management.
      They are:

      • Load all
All Thumbs are loaded with the Library: Slower Library load and max
        memory used but best performance
      • Load Incrementally
Loads thumbnails as they are needed and once loaded, doesn't dicard them: Fast library load and performance gets better during the session
      • Load On Demand
Loads thumbnails as they are needed and then disicards them: Fast library load, slowest performance, least memory utilisation.

    • VobSub Settings moved to "Tools / Options" dialog
    • "Tools/Options" now has CTRL+O as shortcut

Install Gabest's MP4 Splitter for better QT files support by ffdshow.
    Quote:
    Do not forget :

    • Register the filter with regsvr32.exe
    • In the ffdshow config dialog, set SVQ3 to libavcodec

  • Alpha version 1.16 (27 september 2008)
    Nothing major

    • A few menu changes
    • Folders always appear first underneath their parents.
    • 'Saved Playlists' has been added to the Library Tree

  • Alpha version 1.15 (26 september 2008)
Added functions in menu "[ View ]"

    • Refresh F5
    • Go Back F4
    • Go Forward F6
    • File Inspector F3 (replaces the term "Lower pane")
More explained see here : Videophile II - Browser History explained.

    Notes:
    • Views exist and are remembered by Videophile (for the life of the session only) regardless of whether or not they have been saved as a View by the user.
    • Views are automatically refreshed as you cycle through them.
    • Views provide a complete Browsing History for a session in Videophile.....
    • The term "Browser History" no longer discribes the content of the combo box in the toolbar. The content of that combo box is now known as "Current View".
The term "Browser History" is now used to refer to the Full History of Views created during a VideoPhile session.
    • The term "Lower pane" will not be used anymore and is replaced by "File INspector".
The short cut key Ctrl+L does not funciton anymore either and is replaced by function key F3

  • Alpha version 1.14 (24 september 2008)
    • This version incorporates a new version of capstill.dll
This new version of capstill.dll should lead to fewer crashes and hangs and, though you may not notice it, should create thumbnails faster. I would strongly recommend using this version and repeating your test relating to low disk space.
    • New options added and layout changed in the "Add Files" dialog....

  • Alpha version 1.13 (23 september 2008)
    • The 'unattended mode' for adding new files no longer tells you that thumbnails can't be created.
In fact, it shouldn't report any errors at all (unless they are critical).

  • Alpha version 1.12 (23 september 2008)
    • Videophile II no longer starts up with the "File Viewer" visible.
It was never intended to be that way in the final version. I want the interface to look as 'clean' as possible and more like a browser without all the clutter.
      Quote:
The File Viewer will only be visible when :
      - you select 'File Inspector F3" from the "[ View ]" menu
      - when you 'Open' a file for previewing

      Quote:
You can drag-and-drop a thumbnail onto itself?
The icon changes to have a little 'open' symbol on top of it and, when you drop it, the Lower Pane automatically pops-up so that you can preview the file. Pressing 'Escape' hides the Lower Pane again so that you can continue browsing the Library. This is how I use the program and I think it is even more beneficial for those with a small screen...

  • Alpha version 1.11 (22 september 2008)
    • Includes support for GSpot.

Right click on icon in folder - menu option "Open File / with G-Spot"
      Quote:
      Installation info :

      GSPot
      C:\Program Files\Multimedia\GSPot

    • An option to allow the user to use their default media player when double-clicking on thumbnails...
See Videophile II - Set options in .... or menu "[ Tools ] / Options" for more details.

  • Alpha version 1.09 & 1.10 (21 september 2008)
Different changes discussed in this forum.

    • New menu item 'Quit Videophile' on the "[ Library ]" menu.
    • Won't crash for offline files.

  • Alpha version 1.07 (19 september 2008)
    • Anhanced the "new added feature".
You can create posters for very tiny files too.

  • Alpha version 1.06 (18 september 2008)

  • Alpha version 1.05 (17 september 2008)
    • More minor bug fixes - mainly regarding "Creation poster images"
    • Some tiny bug fixes

  • Alpha version 1.04 (16 september 2008)
    • The pop-ups "Unable to Grab thumbnail" during Adding files to the library.
    • Some tiny bug fixes

    • The Run-time error 75 problem has been fixed.
    • ovtool.dll should self-register.

  • Alpha version 1.02 (13 september 2008)
    • Added an option to the Tools menu called 'VobSub' settings.
      Quote:
If you have VobSub installed it will pop-up a config dialog.
On the 'General' tab, under 'Loading', change it to 'Do Not Load'.

  • Alpha version 1.01 (31 augustus 2008)
    • Started testing

Videophile II - Alpha Version history ....

Alpha Version history is terminated as far as i could reconstruct via the messages on this forum.
The version history will be kept up-to-daye as we go furder.
When you read this history, keep in mind that :
Quote:
This history is only to tell how we came to the production version.
To tell what's added in a very short period of time and how much work is done.
This change history contains only visable changes (for the tester) and changes communicated by the programmer
