YAWCAM - Tips & tricks for using ....

  1. Restting resolution :

    Problem :

After my server has restarted the resolution is reset to 160x120 pixels.
Is there a way I can set the default resolution to 640x480?
I've seen "forcevideoformat.txt" mentioned in other posts...
Are there any settings I can put in that file to set the resolution?

    Solution :

If you use the "forcevideoformat.txt" trick and set the video resolution via the new menu option "Settings -> Device (X) - Force video format...", Yawcam will remember the images size next time you start it.
Remember that the forcevideoformat.txt trick is a temporary solution.
If you change any video settings via the ordinary menu options "Device properties..." or "Format control..." after the "Force video format..." has been used, it is possible that Yawcam loses the video size set in the "Force video format..." options.

    Quote:

    the "forcevideoformat.txt" trick :

Go to the yawcam directory and create a text file named forcevideoformat.txt
The text file doesn't have to contain anything it can be empty but has to be there to enable a new menu option.
Now start Yawcam and look in the menu for "Settings -> Device (x) -> Force video format..."
This brings up a new dialog with the option to choose the video format. However, when this option is used the ordinary "Format control..." might stop work for some certain video formats.

  2. YAWCAM - Running as a service :

Here follows some info about running Yawcam as a service:
Run Yawcam as a Service - README

    Info :

It is possible to run Yawcam as a service. This means that Yawcam is running silent in the background as soon as Windows starts. A service is running even before a user has logged in to the system and is still running if all users have logged off. (More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_service)
When Yawcam is running as a service you will not see the Graphical User Interface. This is why it is important to start Yawcam as usual first and change the settings as preferred. You probably want to enable for example the HTTP output at startup. (Settings -> Edit Settings... -> Startup)

    How to :

    1. Start Yawcam as usual.
    2. Change the settings as you like.
    3. Enable wanted output type at startup.
    4. Exit Yawcam.
    5. Install the service.
    6. Start the service.

    Install the service :

    From Windows start menu click:
"Start -> All programs -> Yawcam -> Service -> Install Service"

The service is now installed but not started. It will automatically start next time you start the computer. However you can manually start it right away without restarting the computer. More info below...

    Start/stop the service :

Start or stop the service manually from Windows start menu. Click:
"Start -> All programs -> Yawcam -> Service -> START service"
    or
"Start -> All programs -> Yawcam -> Service -> STOP service"

    Uninstall the service :

You can manually uninstall the service from Windows start menu. Click:
"Start -> All programs -> Yawcam -> Service -> Uninstall Service"

(The service will also be uninstalled if you uninstall Yawcam.)

    Known problems :

If the service is running and Yawcam is started the ordinary way at the same time, no warning messages will be displayed.
  3. YAWCAM - Installing the service in Windows Vista :

To be able to install/start/stop/uninstall the service you will have to right click on the file and choose "Run as administrator".
The scripts will not work otherwise...
  4. YAWCAM - Force / Set frame rate to other then the default value - 30 fps :

    1. This can be done if you edit the template file.

In "Settings -> Edit settings... -> Stream" make sure the "Stream type" is selected as JavaScript.
Then edit the file template_js.html located here: \stream\template_js.html

      Look for the line:
      Code:
      var quality = 30 / var fps = 30

      ...and change 30 to 75.

    2. Changing the fps setting with Yawcam?
If you go to settings, Output/Stream then click Additional settings, there is a slider called ImageProducer rate.

    3. Another fps setting in Settings -> Device -> Format control.

  5. Problem - Error "Could not connect to SMTP host".

Have enabled motion detection and set for file creation and email notification.
The detection is working fine; I get file creation.
For the email notification, the log says only "Could not connect to SMTP host".

Have double checked settings against what my email is using and have tried two SMTP servers with same result.
I am able to send emails, so it is not just a temp'y server problem

    Solution :

I was running access protection in mcafee.
So , i added javaw.exe to the exclude list, works fine in mcafee.
To test if it is the virus detection program shutdown the service and mine worked.

  6. Problem - Yawcam doesn't detect webcam

For some people the beta version can't detect the webcamera.
A solution for this problem is to download and install java JMF 2.1.1e.
    Follow these steps:

    1. Download JMF 2.1.1e for windows from Sun: java.sun.com or from Yawcam: yawcam.com.
    2. Install the software.
    3. Delete Yawcam's settings file. (The file is named yawcam_settings.xml and is located in your yawcam directory, e.g. c:\program files\yawcam\yawcam_settings.xml)
    4. Start Yawcam. (It will most likely still not detect your webcam)
    5. Run the camera detection from Yawcam's menu. (Settings -> Detect webcam... )

  7. Problem - Streamed image is foggy/veiled :

The Yawcam-Preview is perfectly fine, whereas the image on the browser (IE and FF) is kinda foggy, as if it was behind a veil. It's not only the captured picture, it's also the timestamp .. barely visible.
However, the image is sharp ... just veiled.

    Solution :

Make sure that your image overlay is OFF.
    How to check/control this ?

    • Dislpay the "Motion detection" window first.
Via the menu "Window" and select the option.

The "Motion detection" configuring window is displayed.

    • Select the "Actions" tab.

      For the selections :

you can check the "overlay settings"

    • Click for each one the
      button.
      And deselect the "overlay option"
      Save File settings :

      Ftp upload settings :

      Send E-mail settings :

    • Close the window.
Via the menu "Window" and deselect the option.

The "Motion detection" configuring window is closed.

  8. Problem - Eyetoy webcam not detected by Yawcam :

Yawcam doesn't detect my webcam despite me installing the drivers for it.
I've checked using other video capturing programs and it sees the webcam just fine.
All it lists under webcams to select is "Microsoft WDM video capture" and I tried using that and preview and it shows black.
I have a TV tuner in my PC.

    Solution :
Try one of the underneed options :

    • Scan for new devices in Yawcam :
Choose first "Settings / Detect webcam...".

All the available sources will be available to you.
Click OK to confirm your selection.
    • Download the latest version of Yawcam and java JMF 2.1.1e.
Install java JMF 2.1.1e - Follow these steps:

      • Download JMF 2.1.1e for windows from Sun: java.sun.com or from Yawcam: yawcam.com.
      • Install the software.
      • Delete Yawcam's settings file. (The file is named yawcam_settings.xml and is located in your yawcam directory, e.g. c:\program files\yawcam\yawcam_settings.xml)
      • Start Yawcam. (It will most likely still not detect your webcam)
      • Run the camera detection from Yawcam's menu. (Settings -> Detect webcam... )

    • Install the latest version of Yawcam.

      • "Uninstall Yawcam completely.
Including "Remove subdirectory "C:\Program Files\Yawcam" after the remove program".
      • Download the latest version of the software.
      • Reinstall Yawcam

    • Check if the device isn't recognised and named other then on the cam.
      Quote:
Yawcam identifies my Eyetoy webcam camera as:
"MICROSOFT WDN Image Capture (Win32)" device
My model of EyeToy is SLEH-000310.

    • Check the hardware connections.
Unplug / Plug if you need to.
Uninstall / Reinstall the latest drivers for your webcam.
